A timing belt is a toothed reinforced rubber belt that synchronises the rotation of an engine's crankshaft and camshafts so that the valves open and close in correct timing with each piston's stroke.
Timing belts are interference-engine-critical components: failure on most modern Japanese interference engines (e.g., Honda J-series V6, older Toyota 2GR-FE) causes piston-to-valve contact and major engine damage. Many Japanese manufacturers transitioned from timing belts to maintenance-free timing chains during the 2000s — modern Toyota A25A, Honda K20C, and most Mazda SkyActiv engines now use chains, while specific Honda V6 (J35) Odyssey, Pilot, and Acura MDX engines still use belts.
What is a timing belt?
A timing belt is a toothed reinforced rubber belt that synchronises the rotation of an engine’s crankshaft with its camshafts. The synchronization is critical because the camshafts control when the intake and exhaust valves open and close relative to the position of each piston. If the timing slips even a few teeth, the valves and pistons move out of phase — and on most modern Japanese engines, that means the open valves and the rising piston meet at a force that bends the valves and damages the cylinder head.
Engines that suffer this kind of damage on timing failure are called “interference engines.” Most modern Japanese engines designed for fuel-economy efficiency are interference designs, including the Honda J-series V6 (J35) fitted to the Odyssey, Pilot, and Acura MDX, the older Toyota 2GR-FE V6, and many older four-cylinder Toyotas and Hondas. The trade-off is that interference designs allow tighter valve clearances and higher compression ratios, which improves efficiency, at the cost of catastrophic damage if the timing component fails.
Many Japanese manufacturers transitioned from timing belts to timing chains during the 2000s. Modern Toyota A25A four-cylinder, Honda K20C, the 1.5L L15 turbo, and most Mazda SkyActiv engines now use timing chains, which last the operational life of the engine without scheduled replacement. Specific Honda V6 (J35) Odyssey, Pilot, and Acura MDX engines still use belts.
